Exploring Sarasota's Newtown History: A Conversation with Vickie Oldham

 

While researching Sarasota's stories, particularly focusing on Newtown's history, I had the privilege of speaking with Vickie Oldham, President of the Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition. She recommended reaching out to Jetson Grimes, a local salon owner who also operates a gallery dedicated to Newtown's rich heritage.

Upon contacting Grimes, he graciously invited our crew for a tour during our visit to town.

The genesis of the Greater Newtown Historical Gallery is as captivating as its exhibits. Originating from casual storytelling sessions at Grimes' salon, patrons began bringing in old photos, gradually expanding into a comprehensive display. Today, the gallery boasts an extensive collection, spilling over from the salon into the adjacent space."
